As Not Going Out marks its twentieth year on air, the new season offers more than mere escapist farce. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of well-crafted, working-class British humour at a time when our cultural institutions face unprecedented strain. Lee Mack's creation, which returns with six fresh episodes and a celebratory documentary on BBC One and iPlayer from Wednesday, September 23 at 9:30pm BST, remains a rare example of mainstream comedy that neither panders nor patronises.
The show's longevity is itself a quiet rebuke to those who insist that public service broadcasting has lost its relevance. In an era of streaming fragmentation and algorithmic homogeneity, Not Going Out has survived by doing something deceptively simple: it tells jokes about ordinary people, their domestic squabbles, and their small, relatable vanities. That it does so without cruelty or cynicism is increasingly uncommon in a comedy landscape that often mistakes sneering for wit.
What happens in Not Going Out season 15?
The new season finds Lee and Lucy (Sally Bretton) navigating a familiar series of domestic calamities. Lucy's goddaughter Ella commandeers the flat for her twentieth birthday party, threatening Lee's prized Frankie Goes to Hollywood vinyl collection. A botched beauty treatment forces Lucy to hide her face just as Anna and Toby arrive for a weekend visit. Lee, after receiving a Cameo message from Nigel Planer, convinces himself the two are now inseparable friends. Two church women are roped into refereeing a marital argument about money. Lee ruins Lucy's craft fair ambitions with his relentless scepticism. And in the season's most ambitious storyline, Lee discovers an undiscovered Banksy and, in attempting to steal it, finds himself impersonating the artist and embroiled in a blackmail plot.
These are not the stuff of high drama, and that is precisely the point. The show's comedy derives from recognisable human frailty, not from manufactured outrage or political point-scoring. In a media environment saturated with partisan noise, there is something quietly subversive about a sitcom that simply asks us to laugh at ourselves.
Why Not Going Out matters for British cultural policy
The series' survival is also a policy question. The BBC's continued investment in long-running, mid-budget comedy is a deliberate choice, one that prioritises cultural continuity over the chase for viral moments. Not Going Out may not generate the global buzz of a Netflix blockbuster, but it sustains a shared national conversation, a public good that markets alone will not supply. Defenders of the licence fee and of public service broadcasting would do well to cite shows like this as evidence of what is at stake.
Moreover, the show's working-class, London-adjacent sensibility offers a corrective to the metropolitan elitism that populists love to attack. Mack's comedy is rooted in the everyday, in the frustrations of suburban life and the absurdities of modern manners. It is a reminder that liberalism need not be humourless, and that a progressive politics worth defending is one that makes room for laughter.
How to watch Not Going Out season 15 from anywhere
For UK viewers, the show is available free on BBC iPlayer and on the linear BBC One channel. The new season begins on Wednesday, September 23 at 9:30pm BST. For those travelling abroad, a VPN can restore access to iPlayer, though viewers should respect the broadcaster's terms of service. In the United States, Canada, and Australia, season 15 is not available on local services, though earlier seasons can be found on BritBox and Pluto TV in the US, and on BritBox in Canada.
This geo-blocking is a minor inconvenience for fans, but it also underscores a broader point about the global distribution of British culture. Our creative exports are valuable, yet they are often locked behind licensing agreements that treat audiences as consumers rather than citizens. A more open cultural exchange, one that treats comedy as a public good rather than a commodity, would serve everyone better.

Is Not Going Out worth watching in 2026?
Yes, and not merely for nostalgia. In a cultural moment defined by anxiety and division, Not Going Out offers a gentle, humane alternative. It reminds us that the civic values we claim to cherish, tolerance, patience, and the willingness to laugh at our own pretensions, are best practised in the living room, not just the ballot box. For liberals who worry about the coarsening of public discourse, this modest sitcom is a small but meaningful defence of the kind of society we should want to build.
