Return to Paradise returns to BBC One on Friday 6 November 2026 with a double bill, as Detective Sergeant Mackenzie Clarke resumes her investigations in the fictional New South Wales town of Dolphin Cove.
The Australian spin-off of Death in Paradise, a co-production between the BBC and Australia's ABC, opens its third series with two hour-long episodes broadcast from 7.30pm until 9.25pm on BBC One, with the full run available on BBC iPlayer. According to WalesOnline, the series comprises six episodes and will continue weekly on Fridays after the launch.
What happens in the opening episode?
The first episode, titled Stilled Life, according to the BBC's episode listing, finds Mackenzie Clarke, played by Anna Samson, in a difficult emotional state following the departure of pathologist Glenn Strong, played by Tai Hara. The BBC's synopsis describes her as a resident wedding ruiner paying the price for Glenn's absence.
So when an artist dies on stage in front of an audience during an avant-garde performance piece for the local art fair, Mack is dismayed to find that their main suspect, the victim's muse, has a surprising and complicated connection to her.
New characters and guest stars
The new series introduces two significant arrivals: Mack's rebellious mother Jillian, played by Kerry Armstrong, and a new pathologist, Leo, played by Jacob Collins. Brit Brief reports that the new faces bring further complications to the Dolphin Cove police station, where Mack works alongside Senior Constable Colin Cartwright, played by Lloyd Griffith.
Each instalment will feature an array of well-known Australian guest stars, from Robert Mammone to Bruce Spence, the Express reports. Cases this series include a wildlife worker killed inside a secured cage and a film director shot at her own screening.
Anna Samson on Mack's state of mind
Samson has spoken about her character's emotional turmoil at the start of the season, following Glenn's departure.
She said: The big pain for her is that Glenn has left Dolphin Cove and she feels hugely responsible. For the first time, she's not trying to run away from Dolphin Cove, she's sitting in a kind of self-inflicted punishment as a form of penance.
She continued: She's back in uniform; she's sitting it out hoping that Glenn will come back because she doesn't feel she can move forward without him. She's in a state of limbo.
Samson also explained how the introduction of Mack's mother would shed further light on Mack's state of mind.
She said: It offers a lot of insight into who Mack is, why she is the way she is, why she doesn't like Dolphin Cove, and particularly about the failed wedding to Glenn. Any more would spoil the surprises.
