When the Duke of Sussex met Meghan Markle in 2016, their romance bridged two seemingly irreconcilable worlds: the ancient rituals of the British monarchy and the fluid, image-driven culture of Hollywood. Yet according to a prominent digital creator, the gap between them was not merely geographical or cultural. It was technological. Prince Harry has admitted he had 'no clue' about content creation and influencer culture before meeting his future wife, a confession that illuminates the peculiar isolation of royal life and the democratising power of the digital sphere.
What Prince Harry admitted he did not understand about social media
Lorna Andrews, known online as Lorna Luxe, recounted a 2014 encounter with the Prince in Palm Beach, Florida, after watching him play polo. Writing in The Sun's Fabulous magazine, she described how a then-single Harry approached her table and engaged in candid conversation. 'He confessed he had no clue how content creation and influencers worked, and there was an honesty to him,' she recalled. 'It's fair to say, I liked the guy - a charismatic and clever bloke who I'm grateful I got to meet.'
For a man raised within the gilded confines of the Palace, the mechanics of digital influence were evidently as foreign as the grammar of a different language. This admission is striking not because it reveals ignorance, but because it underscores how thoroughly the institution of monarchy insulates its members from the ordinary currents of contemporary life. While millions of young people were building careers and communities online, Harry was navigating a world where public image was managed by courtiers and broadcast through official channels.
Meghan Markle's digital fluency and the rise of The Tig
In stark contrast, Meghan Markle was thriving as a digital tastemaker long before she became a Duchess. Her lifestyle blog, The Tig, and her personal Instagram account, which featured curated aesthetic photos, shoe selfies, and candid pictures of her dogs, positioned her as a relatable yet aspirational figure. Her profile was eventually shut down once her relationship with Harry became public, a decision that many interpreted as a concession to royal protocol.
Meghan made a high-profile return to Instagram in January 2025 under the handle @meghan, using her platform to advocate for online safety and the protection of children. She has been meticulous about preserving the privacy of her two children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, by obscuring their faces or sharing photos from behind. She also operates a profile for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, signalling a deliberate and strategic re-entry into the digital economy.
Harry's secret Instagram account and the romance that began with a DM
Despite his initial lack of knowledge, Harry was not entirely absent from social media. According to HELLO!, he maintained a private Instagram account under the code name @SpikeyMau5, a mashup of his former Scotland Yard alias 'Spike' and his favourite DJ, Deadmau5. The account played a pivotal role in the couple's early relationship: Meghan was given his private handle, and her direct message sparked their romance before their first date at London's Soho House in July 2016.
This detail is more than a charming anecdote. It reveals that even a prince, however insulated, recognised the necessity of informal digital connection when pursuing a relationship across cultural divides. The private account was a space where Harry could be himself, unmediated by official channels, and it was precisely that authenticity that facilitated one of the most scrutinised romances of the modern era.
How the Waleses manage their public image differently
The contrast with Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, could not be more pronounced. The Waleses manage their digital footprint exclusively through Kensington Palace, utilising verified accounts on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram (@princeandprincessofwales). Their feeds are meticulously curated, featuring official engagements, patronages, and family milestones captured by professional photographers. The approach is disciplined, hierarchical, and strictly separates public duty from private life.
On Tuesday, September 8, the couple shared three images of their eldest son, Prince George, 13, in his uniform on his first day at Eton College, taken by Matt Porteous. The photographs were polished, dignified, and entirely consistent with the institutional brand. There is no room for spontaneity, no glimpse behind the curtain, and certainly no direct messages to strangers.
What the royal digital divide tells us about elite culture
The divergence between the brothers is not merely a matter of personal preference. It reflects a broader tension within elite institutions between control and connection. The monarchy, like many traditional power structures, has historically relied on managed visibility. Social media, by its very nature, disrupts that control. It demands authenticity, rewards vulnerability, and erodes the carefully constructed distance between public figures and the public.
Harry's admission of ignorance, and his subsequent embrace of digital tools, can be read as a microcosm of a larger societal shift. The institutions that once held a monopoly on attention are now compelled to compete in an open marketplace of ideas and images. Whether that is a threat or an opportunity depends on one's perspective, but it is undeniably a transformation that affects us all.
Why this matters for civic engagement and individual liberty
For those of us who value liberal democratic principles, the digital sphere represents both a promise and a peril. It democratises voice, allowing individuals to bypass traditional gatekeepers and speak directly to audiences. Yet it also enables the spread of misinformation, the amplification of populist rage, and the erosion of reasoned discourse. The royal family's struggle to navigate this landscape is, in microcosm, our own.
The Duke of Sussex's journey from digital ignorance to digital engagement is not a story about celebrity gossip. It is a story about the necessity of adaptation in a world where information flows freely and hierarchies are constantly challenged. If a prince can learn to navigate the complexities of content creation, then perhaps our institutions, too, can evolve without losing their essential character.
The lesson is not that tradition must yield entirely to novelty, but that curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn are the very qualities that sustain relevance. Harry's confession, delivered with characteristic candour, is a reminder that no one, however elevated, is exempt from the demands of the modern age.
