Hasan Rrahmani prepares for his 2,200km cycling journey from Surrey to Kosovo in memory of his father

A Surrey resident is embarking on an extraordinary 2,200km cycling journey from the UK to Kosovo, transforming personal loss into a powerful charitable mission. Hasan Rrahmani, whose family sought refuge in Britain during the European conflict that reshaped the region's security landscape, is undertaking this remarkable expedition in memory of his father.

A Journey Born from Loss

Rrahmani's father, Emin, passed away in 2019 at age 71, merely four weeks after receiving a devastating pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The family's story, which began in Kosovo before their displacement in 1999, reflects the broader narrative of regional displacement and resettlement that continues to shape European communities.

The Route: From Surrey to Kosovo

Starting from Surrey, a region currently witnessing its own transformative moments, Rrahmani and his cycling partner Gary Lloyd will:

  • Depart from Hendon, heading to Portsmouth harbour
  • Cross the Channel to France
  • Navigate through Switzerland and the Alps
  • Traverse northern Italy to Ancona
  • Journey through Albania and Macedonia
  • Finally reach Kosovo

A Personal Mission with Broader Impact

"That was one of the most difficult conversations," Rrahmani recalls of telling his father about the diagnosis. "The words were just not coming out of my mouth. He understood it was cancer, but he didn't comprehend the severity."

The 15-18 day journey will culminate in Pristina, where Rrahmani's family plans to hold a celebration of Emin's life. Kerry Thomas from Pancreatic Cancer UK praised the initiative, highlighting its significance in raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research.

Legacy and Hope

This charitable endeavor not only honors Emin's memory but also raises crucial awareness about pancreatic cancer, a disease often diagnosed too late. The journey symbolizes hope, resilience, and the power of turning personal tragedy into positive community action.
